Taking care of your tires with regular tire service is an investment in your vehicle.  In spite of this, they are one of the most overlooked of all a vehicle’s components.  Having a tire service performed on a monthly basis is the best way to prevent a costly tire repair, or possibly even more extensive damage to your car from occurring.  Most importantly, taking care of your tires enhances the safety of you and your passengers.

3 Guidelines for Tire Service:

  • Check air pressure and take care of under-inflated tires immediately.  The resistance of an under-inflated tire generates heat through friction, causing damage, and making a tire repair necessary.  Remember to check the spare.  Filling your spare with air at the same time is good practice so that hopefully, you’ll never be stranded by the side of the road with a flat and will avoid an inconvenient and costly tire repair.
  • Check tread depth to ensure good traction. Place the edge of a penny upside down in the grooves.  If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for a tire replacement.  Are the inside groove and the outside edge wearing evenly?  If not, your car may be out of alignment.  Do you feel your steering wheel vibrating?  Your tire may need its balance weight restored, or you may need a wheel alignment to improve the overall ride and handling of your vehicle.
  • Rotate tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles.  This will ensure that all four wear at the same rate.  If they are showing signs of excessive wear and tear, it’s best to have all four replaced at the same time.  At the very least, purchase either the two front ones or the two back ones at the same time.  Consider the climate where you live and the purpose of your vehicle to determine the right type to purchase for your car or truck.

If you follow the three basic guidelines above regularly, you are sure to prevent expensive tire repairs, extend the life of your tires and vehicle, and guard the safety of you and your passengers.
