It may be time to give a little extra attention to your vehicle's cooling system, especially if you are starting out on a long road trip. Here are Four Easy Radiator Service Tips For a Cooler Summer:
- Check the Coolant Level: Check the level of coolant at least once a month. Also, make sure that the reserve tank or overflow tank fluid levels are where they should be. Ask your auto mechanic for assistance with the correct antifreeze-coolant mix.
- Check Caps and Hose: Check the caps and hoses on the radiator tank and the reserve tank. Look for cracks or other damage and replace the cap immediately if damaged. Don't forget to inspect the hoses and tubes that lead to the water pump, thermostat and reserve tank for cracks or cuts that may result in antifreeze leaks. It's a good idea to replace hoses about every three to four years, as they get dry and brittle with age.
- Check the Radiator and Overflow Tank: Every few months, visually check the radiator and overflow tank. Small pinholes and punctures can be easily repaired. However, if ignored, they can become bigger cracks or holes that may be more difficult to repair.
- Radiator Flush: Because dirt and contaminants have a tendency to build up and antifreeze can become acidic and lose its effectiveness, drain and refill the radiator with fresh coolant and water at least once a year in colder climates, or at least every 18 months to two years in warmer climates. This will remove dirt, contaminants and other metal particles that restrict the flow of the antifreeze coolant mixture.
