When you think about auto repair service, what comes to mind?  Do you see dollar signs, lost time at work, and frustration at something not done right?  Don’t let these feelings get you down. Take a look at the four “easy” tasks below to help you put these 4 auto repair service tasks into perspective, understanding their importance in preventing extensive damage from occurring to your vehicle down the road.

#1: Engine Oil and Filter Change - When the motor is running, oil lubricates, cools, and seals critical internal engine components. That's why a regular schedule to change the oil and filter is an important part of overall vehicle maintenance. To provide proper protection, the oil level should be kept between the upper and lower levels on the dipstick. Neglecting to change the oil and filter periodically will increase contaminants and shorten engine life.

#2:  Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter Change - Transmission fluid provides hydraulic power and acts as a lubricant and cooling agent for moving parts. For the transmission to function properly, the level of fluid must be correct. Slipping may occur if the level is too low, and damage may occur from aeration if the level is too high. The fluid breakdown is the leading cause of transmission failure.  Most manufacturers recommend changing the fluid every 30,000 miles.

#3:  Cooling System Repair and Maintenance - Checking the coolant level, mixture, and condition on a regular basis could prevent your car from breaking down on the road. Coolant/antifreeze raises the boiling point and lowers the freezing point of the system when mixed with distilled water. A 50/50 mixture is recommended for optimum performance. Neglecting the cooling system, or deciding to put off a repair like a thermostat replacement, could cause the engine to overheat, resulting in a blown head gasket.

#4:  Tire Pressure Check and Rotation - Be sure to check the air pressure in your tires on a regular basis and rotate them front-to-rear occasionally to extend their life and maximize your cost savings. Driving tires beyond their life expectancy can be extremely dangerous as baldness can cause loss of traction (hydroplane) on wet roads.  Check air pressure and rotate to save money, but don't ignore a replacement if necessary.

If you ignore the 4 simple auto repair services listed above, you will certainly be headed to a costly auto repair.  Just follow the vehicle service schedule outlined in your owner’s manual.  A little preventative maintenance and careful observation can save you on costly auto repair services.  It will also give you the peace of mind that your vehicle is always ready to go!
