Many people are starting to plan their summer road trips. With the price of gas and diesel on the rise, there are some car maintenance items that will help you save cash at the pump! This probably sounds good in this economy. By following these good-sense driving and vehicle maintenance tips, you will not only save on the cost of fuel, but also help keep our environment clean.

You May Wonder About What Does Good Car Maintenance Includes:

  • Replacing air filters. A clogged air filter causes your engine to work harder and your vehicle to become less fuel efficient.
  • Being serious about car care. Follow the manufacturer-recommended vehicle maintenance intervals as closely as possible. Your car's performance depends on it!
  • Use the right oil and change the oil and filter regularly. Proper oil viscosity (5w30 over 10w30) can be a 1-2% increase in mileage.
  • Avoid idling. Turn the engine off if you have to sit more than a few minutes (idling gets 0 mpg).
  • Watch the speed limit. Driving over 60 mph decreases fuel economy. Use your cruise control on long stretches of road to maintain a steady speed. Avoid fast accelerations.
  • Use lower octane fuel. Unless your vehicle requires premium, buy the lowest octane appropriate for your car. Pricey premium won't boost fuel economy.
  • Don't "top off" the gas tank. Overfilling wastes money as additional gas will slop and seep off.
  • Make sure the gas cap is tight. Gas evaporates if it has an escape. A loose, missing, or damaged cap can cause you to lose up to 30 gals per year.
  • Keep the correct air pressure in your tires. Under-inflation creates more resistance and makes your engine work harder, thereby reducing fuel mileage and tire life by as much as 15%.
  • Keep your engine serviced. A poorly running engine can reduce your mileage by up to 4%. A misfiring spark plug can reduce your car's fuel efficiency by 30%.
  • Eliminate drag. Make sure your wheels are in proper alignment, roof racks or bicycle racks removed when not being used, trunk empty, etc.
  • Diesel Fuel Injection service: A clean fuel injection system provides for maximized fuel economy and reduced vehicle emissions, restores performance and improves drivability.
