New drivers may not realize that regular tire service is an important part of car maintenance. Tires are the only parts of your vehicle that actually touch the road, so proper inflation, even tread wear, wheel alignment and balancing are important. The first question drivers may ask is “How many miles do tires last on average? We would expect at least 50,000 miles from the tires that come with any new vehicle, but tire life depends on many factors, such as:

  • The quality of the tire.
  • Is it a performance summer tire or an all-season tire?
  • The type of car and how the tire is mounted.
  • The treadwear rating, i.e., the expected length of tread life.
  • How the car is driven.

The second question drivers may ask is, “What is included in a tire service?”

  • Check and Inflate -- Having the correct amount of pressure in your tires means your vehicle is getting optimal contact with the road. Properly inflated tires help improve fuel economy and wear more evenly as well. A tire service includes checking the tire pressure and inflating or deflating the tires as appropriate to meet your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Tire Rotation Service -- It’s important to have good traction so you feel comfortable on the road. Moving your tires around to a different position will make sure they wear out in an even pattern. Typically, tires should be rotated every six months, or 6,000 to 8,000 miles, or about every other oil change.
  • Wheel Alignment and Balancing -- Balancing is done with wheel weights to achieve smooth rolling of the tire. An imbalanced tire expresses itself as a wheel shimmy. The steering and suspension systems have wear points: bushings, ball and socket joints, and miscellaneous mechanical links. Over time, the steering and suspension systems are jostled, producing wear and tear, resulting in poor cornering and handling, and a significant increase in tire wear.

Quality tire service ensures you will get the most miles out of your tires while maximizing traction on all four wheels and helping prevent flat tires.
