It’s a little worrisome to drivers when they start to notice shifting problems. Unfortunately, many drivers don’t really think about the condition of the transmission in their vehicle until they are faced with the possibility of a costly transmission repair. Constantly exposed to friction and heat, the components of a transmission should be kept lubricated with clean fluid, which helps prevent overheating and wear. This is why it’s important to schedule timely transmission service.
So how often should you schedule transmission service? Some vehicle manufacturers may recommend replacing transmission fluid about every 50,000 miles. Others may way it never needs to be changed. What should you do? Have your mechanic check the color of your vehicle’s transmission fluid on a regular basis.
The color of the fluid is an indication of whether or not it’s time for a transmission flush.
- A bright pink color indicates it is still fresh and does not need to be changed.
- Light brown (with a hint of pink) means it would be good to change it before it actually becomes completely contaminated.
- A dark brown color means that the fluid has probably never been changed. It is highly likely that there are metal particles floating around in it from the transmission.
It never hurts to err on the side of caution when it comes to servicing your vehicle. To make sure your transmission fluid is still clean and effective, have it checked between every 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Moisture and dust in the vent tubes can still cause contamination even if you are using what’s considered “lifetime” transmission fluid.
A word of advice: Take time to read the manufacturer’s service guidelines in your owner’s manual to find out what your transmission needs done and when it should be done!
