Some drivers don’t think about their brakes until all of a sudden they find themselves sliding to a stop at a red light. So what is the answer to the question, “Is brake service necessary?” Simply stated, good brakes are crucial for safe driving.

But it can be confusing to figure out what could be causing braking problems. It could simply be dust on the rotors causing squeaking that requires little or no repair. Or, it could be something more complex, such as failing shocks or worn belts. So before you can make an informed decision about the type of repair that may be required, schedule an inspection of your brakes.

So why is brake service necessary? STOP, and think about the problems that will occur if regular brake service is neglected:

  • The brake warning light on the instrument panel will come on.
  • You will hear squealing, squeaking, or grinding noises when braking.
  • You will feel wobbling, vibrating, or scraping when braking.
  • The brake pedal feels “mushy” and it goes down to the floor in order to come to a stop.
  • You feel the car pulling to one side or the other as you use the brakes.
  • If the brake fluid is leaking onto the hot motor, it will create a burning smell.

Here are some questions to ask your mechanic when it comes to brake repair:

  • How much “life” is left on the brake pads? You can usually wait until they are down to 15-20 percent before replacing them.
  • What is included in brake service? Your brakes, including pads, rotors, and calipers should be thoroughly inspected, with a written quote for work to be done.
  • Can the rotors be resurfaced or do they have to be replaced? This depends on how deeply grooves have worn down into the rotors.
  • Should brake fluid be replaced? Draining out the old and adding new fluid periodically will help extend the life of your brakes.
  • Why do brakes need to be cleaned and lubed? If the brake pad’s friction surface is hardening from heat, cleaning and lubing the moving components can reduce brake noise and extend their lifespan.
