Once those temperatures hit the single digits, you may need to schedule an oil change to make sure you are using the right kind of oil. Colder temperatures may be necessary when it comes to keeping up with the proper maintenance of your vehicle.
* Thickness
Motor oil comes in different varieties. Prior to an oil change service, most auto shops will ask you what type of oil you are interested in having added to your vehicle. If an oil is too thin, it won't protect your engine properly in the winter. On the flip side, too thick makes it harder for your engine to start because it is too gooey. This leads to wear and tear on your engine and battery. By the end of the winter you could have some serious vehicle issues.

Regular oil changes also include changing the filter. The type of oil you are using affects your filter and how well it works. When the weather is cold and your motor oil is too thick, the filter can quickly become gummed up and not work as well when it comes to removing fine particulates.
