Radiator Service: Maintenance Guidelines
If you’ve driven very many miles, you have probably seen a car pulled to the side of the road, the hood up and steam rising from the engine. An engine gives off energy in the form of heat. If you plan on taking a long road trip, be sure to schedule a radiator service. If your radiator is not functioning properly and cannot remove that heat, your engine will quickly overheat and you will find yourself in the same predicament. The engine becomes inoperable, and you will be stuck with a costly radiator repair bill. It may even be necessary to actually replace the radiator!
To achieve the maximum lifetime performance of your radiator follow these radiator service and maintenance guidelines:
- Radiator Flush – A radiator flush ensures that the correct flow of the water and antifreeze mixture. Ask your radiator repair technician as to whether your vehicle requires flushing the coolant system at certain intervals.
- Maintain proper level of coolant – Because coolant escapes and evaporates, especially if your engine runs hot, have the cooling system checked. If the level is consistently too low, it may indicate a leak.
- Other potential problems – There are other issues that could cause problems with the radiator overheating, such as rusty hose clamps, corrosion to the aluminum core, and problems with the thermostat that regulates coolant flow.
A properly maintained radiator should last for at least eight to 10 years. Older units are made from metal and can last for the lifetime of the vehicle. Today’s newer vehicles have units that are mostly made from plastic--which expands and contracts as it heats and cools. But, with proper maintenance, the radiator should last quite a long time—possibly the entire life of your vehicle.
Remember: Prevent overheating and keep your cool during the hot days of summer with professional radiator service!
