Stranded on the side of the road is not where you want to be on a cold winter’s day. It’s a dangerous place to be even on a good day. Whether your vehicle has just a few miles or many, there’s no guarantee that it will be trouble-free. There’s always the possibility that someday you'll find yourself with a radiator overheating, a punctured tire, failing brakes,…and myriads of other problems. Remember it’s important to stay calm until you can get to a nearby auto shop for help.
A few safety tips to keep you and your family safe:
- Until you can get your vehicle stopped, don’t panic, and don’t overreact.
- Get over to the shoulder as quickly and safely as possible, out of the flow of traffic.
- Turn on your hazard flashers so that other drivers recognize that you are having problems. Be familiar with the location of the flashers when you need them.
- Don’t let anyone get out of the vehicle unless there’s smoke or fire, or you can’t get your vehicle out of traffic. If possible, get your car to the nearest auto shop.
- If the car absolutely will not run, call for roadside assistance or a nearby auto center for towing.
- Avoid leaving your vehicle to walk for help unless absolutely necessary. If you have to walk, stay on the left-hand shoulder facing traffic on a two-way highway. On a freeway, walk as far to the right as possible.
- Don’t abandon your vehicle while waiting for a tow truck to arrive. If they cannot repair your vehicle on-site and get you going again, they can tow it to an auto shop for repairs.
Remember: For car problems that may leave you stranded on the side of the road, don’t panic, and remember these safety tips to ensure you arrive safely at your destination.
