Steps to Avoid a Car Battery Replacement!
Don't let a dead truck or car battery kill your summer fun! The culprit for major problems is hot temperatures (not cold), that can shorten battery life. Typically, a car battery has a lifespan of about three and a half years. However, there are two main conditions that could kill your car battery, resulting in the need of a premature car battery replacement are
- Excessive heat -- Heat causes battery fluid to evaporate, resulting in damage inside the internal structure.
- Overcharging – A malfunction of the voltage regulator, allowing too high a charging rate. That means a slow death for your car battery.
Several other causes of a dead car battery can be corrected with a simple repair:
- Corrosion Buildup – By-products from the acid accumulates around the posts. As this builds up, the electrical connection grows weaker and weaker until the car will not start. Simply cleaning the posts will correct this problem.
- Faulty Cable Connections – When the screws or bolts that attach the cables from the battery posts to the starter are loose, electrical connections will be short-circuited and your vehicle probably won't start. Tightening these connection cables should take care of this problem.
- Extended Inactivity - If you haven't started your vehicle for several weeks, the alternator has not been able to keep the battery charged and its power slowly drains away. Just start an idle vehicle about once a week so the alternator can do its job.
How to avoid Car Battery problems!
- Be sure the electrical system is charging efficiently;
- Depending on the type of battery, check the fluid level and top it off as necessary (use distilled water), especially in hot weather.
- Keep the top free of corrosion and dirt. Dirt not only acts as a conductor, draining battery power, it also can act as an insulator, inhibiting current flow.
- At some point in time, a car battery replacement is inevitable. Make sure you replace it with one that's rated at least as high as the original.
Remember: Take care of your car battery by following the suggestions above and keep your summer fun alive!
