In today's economy, it's good news to receive a strong return on your investments. Next, to their home, a vehicle is the second largest investment many people make. It's a wise driver that establishes, and then follows, a regular preventative maintenance plan which includes a car tune-up, to protect that automotive investment. A tune up is a little different in today's modern vehicle that it was on yesterday's models. However, it should still be part of the plan to ensure you get the maximum reliability and safety of the vehicle you depend upon.

Your car should receive a tune up (often referred to as a "major service" in your owner's manual) every two years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Yesterday's Tune-Up --

A tune-up for yesterday's older vehicles is for engines that use a distributor. The distributor cap, distributor rotor, and ignition wires are replaced in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. The ignition timing and valves are adjusted, and spark plugs are also replaced as needed.

Today's Tune Up --

A tune-up for today's vehicles consists basically of the orderly process of inspection, diagnosis, testing, and adjustment that is necessary periodically to maintain peak engine performance or restore the engine to original operating efficiency. This may include replacing the fuel and/or air filters, checking belts and hoses and replacing as needed, checking fluid levels (oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, etc.) under the hood and replenishing as necessary, adjusting the clutch (unless yours is self-adjusting), replacing the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve, and servicing the battery.

Remember: A car tune up pays big dividends with improved fuel economy, longer engine life, and cleaner air.
