If your vehicle is starting to act a little strange, such as a dash light coming on for a brief moment, dimming headlights, flickering gauges, maybe an odd smell, or a growling sound coming from under the hood, it could be caused by an starter problem. Without getting the right auto electrical repair, this problem can cause car trouble ranging from slow starts to a car that won’t start all.

The starter is a relatively simple component containing only a few parts, but it plays a critical role in a vehicle's operation. Essentially it turns the mechanical energy of the engine's rotating crank shaft into electricity, powering your car's accessories, and keeps the battery fully charged.

Here are six signs of trouble to watch out for:

  1. Dashboard Warning Light –When the dashboard warning light (shaped like a battery) illuminates, it serves as a warning that there are problems looming with the starter.
  2. Strange Sounds – Strange sounds coming from under the hood indicates that there could be problems with the pulley in the alternator.
  3. Burning Smell – A burning smell could be caused by an over-heating alternator, worn out wires, or a circuit or fuse malfunction.
  4. Dimming Lights – This is usually an indication of a failing starter--the car battery isn’t getting a charge to run the lighting system.
  5. Dead Battery – This is especially common during the winter months when lights are on for longer periods of time or if the lights are left on after turning the car off.  A simple jump-start should take care of the immediate problem, but don’t forget to have your battery checked.  Damage to starters and alternators is often caused by weak batteries.
  6. Electrical Malfunctions -- A broken connection or single little wire can lead to a series of electrical malfunctions.  A simple auto electrical service, such as reconnecting an on-line fuse or connection can bring life back to your car.
