The price of gasoline has been going up and down for quite a while now which is causing many drivers to wonder how to save money at the pump. Having the auto repair services performed at the right intervals, plus the driving tips described below will help keep money in your wallet as well as keep our environment cleaner.

Consider the tips below:

  • Replace dirty air filters. Your engine will have to work harder if the air filter is dirty and clogged.
  • Follow the maintenance schedule. For the best possible operating performance, follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule for your vehicle.
  • Regular oil changes. Follow the interval schedule, use the correct weight of oil, and don’t forget to change the filter.
  • Avoid idling. If it’s safe to do so, turn off your car’s motor if you have to idle for more than a few minutes.
  • Watch your speed. Driving over 60mph will increase the amount of fuel used. Use cruise control when possible to maintain a steady speed and avoid unnecessary acceleration.
  • Use lower octane fuel. Use the lowest octane appropriate for your vehicle since costly premium doesn’t really boost your fuel economy.
  • Don't "top off." This wastes money as overfilling your gas tank allows gas to slop and seep off.
  • Tighten the gas cap. A loose, missing, or damaged cap allows gas to evaporate, causing you to lose up to 30 gallons of gas per year.
  • Correct tire pressure. Underinflated tires create more resistance on the road, making your engine work harder, reducing fuel economy, and wearing out tires faster than normal.
  • Regular Tune Ups. Bad spark plugs should be replaced, as well as other adjustments made to keep your engine running efficiently.
  • Reduce weight and eliminate drag. Remove roof racks or bicycle racks when not being used, empty the trunk, and keep the wheels aligned and tires balanced.
  • Clean fuel injectors. This will help restore optimum engine performance, increases fuel efficiency, and reduces toxic emissions.
