Transmission Repair: 10 Signs of Problems
Diagnosing car problems may seem like an impossible task. The first time you start noticing something out of the ordinary, it's time to start considering the problem and finding a way to fix it. Mechanical auto problems are usually coupled with distinct sounds and sensations that are key indicators that something isn't functioning the way it was designed to. Transmissions get a lot of use over the years, and after a while, they're bound to start having some problems. Transmission repairs can be expensive, so it's worthwhile to pay attention to anything that seems unusual.
Consider these 10 signs of trouble.
- Refuses to go into Gear
- Burning Smell
- Noisy in Neutral
- Gears slipping
- Dragging clutch
- Leaking fluid
- Check Engine light
- Grinding or Shaking
- Whining, Clunking, or Humming
- Lack of Response
The above problems are commonly caused by low transmission fluid (the result of a leak), wrong viscosity (thickness) of fluid, a needed adjustment of the shift cables or clutch linkage, or mechanical wear that will need the replacement of parts, such as a worn reverse idler gear or worn bearings, possibly coupled with worn gear teeth.
Ask your transmission repair mechanic run a diagnostic test to identify early problems that you may not even be able to feel or see. It could be something other than the transmission, such as the constant velocity joints (CV joints), or even the differential.
