If you are wanting to know what are signs of transmission problems, you may already be experiencing issues with the transmission that are causing you some anxiety. Fixing problems in the transmission are costly, so be proactive by understanding what it takes to protect your car from transmission damage. Because the transmission is a critical component for your car, it’s absolutely essential that you schedule the recommended transmission service as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Just what does regular transmission service include, you wonder?

  • For manual transmission vehicles, inspect and adjust the clutch pedal as needed,
  • Inspecting, topping off, or flushing the transmission fluid for automatics and manuals (at least twice each year).
  • Examining and cleaning the sump pump or pan
  • Cleaning or replacing the filter
  • replacing the pan gasket

In between scheduled services, check the level of the transmission fluid. If it is too low, it can damage your transmission as it will not be properly lubricated. There are usually no warning signs of transmission problems, so be sure to schedule regular transmission service.

When facing an expensive transmission repair, here are some questions to ask:

  • Is the transmission still under the manufacturer’s warranty?
  • Should you get a second opinion?
  • Is the cost of the repair more than the value of your car, especially if it’s an older vehicle with lots of miles?
  • Will the repair offer more years of trouble-free operation so you can avoid purchasing a new vehicle, or is it just buying a little time until the next breakdown?
  • What kind of repair is needed (replace the transmission with new, rebuilt, or remanufactured)?
  • What will the warranty or guarantee cover, just parts, or parts and labor?
