What are the causes of engine failure?
Although many drivers experience the dreaded non-start of their vehicles, some suffer the worst circumstance when the car clicks out during a road trip. Such malfunctions have myriad causes. However, most of these mishaps find their origins in the engine. What are the causes of engine failure? They range from manufacturing defects to negligent care and maintenance. Most often, they are in the latter category. Engine repair frequency and costs could be significantly less if vehicle owners stay on a regular schedule of consistent servicing. The time and money invested in preventive maintenance pales in comparison to major repairs.
Three of the primary reasons leading to engine breakdown are:
- Insufficient quantity of fresh oil -- Combustion engines are mechanical devices, consisting of shafts, pistons, valves, springs, and pumps. These demand new lubrication at proper intervals. Without it, the oil will deplete or get dirty, losing its capacity to fight friction between moving parts.
- Overheating -- if the engine exceeds operable temperature limits, it will suffer cracks in the block, leading to a decline in compression, i.e. the confined mixture of air and fuel, and leaks in fluid conduits. Many times, overheating results from coolant leakage, fan malfunction, or a broken water pump. Again, disciplined servicing can spot these problems before an overheating incident.
- Faulty combustion -- sometimes the vehicle's fuel will combust, and explode actually, at the wrong time within the engine's cylinder. This might start with erosion in a piston or other engine part. Pressure builds in the crankcase while connecting rods flounder because of oil leakage. Also called detonation, this pre-mature combustion causes failure that necessitates complicated engine repair if not replacement.
