If you understand the workings of a vehicle, you know that not just anyone can perform automotive repairs. Just what does an automotive service technician do, you ask? If you’ve had a car for very long, you know that they change oil, repair tires and inspect brakes. But, do you know how much training and testing an automotive repair technician has to go through in order to help you take care of your vehicle?

Consider the automotive repair technicians at your local auto shop. Are they ASE-certified, and what does that mean?

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is a professional organization that certifies automotive professionals and auto shops in the United States and parts of Canada. This independent, non-profit organization was created in 1972 in response to consumers needing to distinguish between potentially incompetent and competent automotive technicians.

ASE offers several certification tests for automotive professionals and aims to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of automotive professionals. In addition to passing these exams, two years of relevant hands-on work experience is required for certification. Upon certification, the applicant will receive an ASE shoulder insignia and a wall certificate suitable for framing.

ASE certification is usually required by employers for those interested in pursuing a career in professional automotive service. When you see the ASE certificate of completion displayed in your auto shop, you know that your vehicle is in good hands.

So what does an automotive service technician do?

  • Know how to use specialized diagnostic equipment.
  • Recommends and performs preventative vehicle maintenance at the right intervals.
  • Can repair and replace worn-out parts as well as disassemble, clean, and reassemble major parts.
  • Knows how to explain in easy-to-understand terms problems, the repair needed, and the cost and time required.
  • Has received specialized training for the electronic systems in today’s vehicles.
  • Is knowledgeable about vehicles that run on alternative fuels, (such as ethanol and electricity).

Let your certified automotive repair technician take care of your vehicle so you can leave the auto shop knowing that you are driving a safe vehicle!
