Is your engine starting to lose power? You may be a little anxious that it may die on you completely and you will be stranded on the side of the road. Of course, neglecting regular engine service is a guarantee that it will eventually start to fail. Unfortunately, even if you have kept up with recommended engine service, even normal wear and tear over the miles can eventually cause damage to the engine, You may start to notice one or more of the engine problems below:

• More smoke than usual is coming from the muffler,
• The engine started to make loud knocking noises,
• Oil is burning faster than normal and the level of oil is getting too low too fast,
• The engine is overheating fairly frequently.

Fortunately, these problems don’t mean that you have to junk your old vehicle and rush out to buy a new one. Even though the cost of a major repair may be high, the cost of a new vehicle may be more than you want to spend by the time you make a down payment, monthly payments plus interest, and higher insurance rates. Discuss with your mechanic what it means to restore your current vehicle with a rebuilt engine and how much it will cost.

• The engine block is removed from the vehicle and disassembled.
• The components of the engine (which includes piston rings, bearings, gaskets, seals, camshaft, and crankshaft) are inspected to determine their condition and then cleaned.
• Any parts that are damaged will be replaced with either new or refurbished parts that meet OEM standards.
• The cylinders will be refurbished so that the new piston rings can form a proper seal.
• The engine is then reassembled and re-installed into your vehicle.

A word of advice:  Ask about the warranty offered by the auto shop—is it just for parts or for parts and labor? Because a rebuilt engine has been inspected, cleaned, and fitted with new parts, it is often more reliable than your old engine, as well as being covered by a warranty.
