Do you worry about any of the maintenance or repair services that have been performed on your vehicle? Were you offered a warranty on parts or labor? Knowing the difference between types of warranties can get confusing--there are good ones and not so good ones. Understanding the difference is important before making a decision as to whether or not to purchase a warranty, and whether or not it is a good deal.
Before making a decision, there are three questions you can ask your auto center that will help you understand the ins-and-outs of the warranties
- First, what all is covered (or not covered)? Be sure to read the fine-print and make sure your questions are answered thoroughly. Because not all warranties cover the same things, don't assume anything. Will the warranty cover bumper-to-bumper, or does it cover just the drivetrain? Does it cover the more common type of repairs? How many miles or months is it good for?
- Second, what does it cost and how long is it good for? Will it be cost-effective to purchase the warranty? For example, compare on average, how much you spend every year in auto repair versus how much the warranty will cost for a year. If there is a deductible, how often is that paid?
- Third, are there any rules and/or stipulations? Generally, all extended warranties come with a set of rules or stipulations. Read the fine print! How stringent are the rules on the particular warranty you are offered and does it apply only to that particular dealer or auto repair shop?
Remember, before making a decision to purchase an extended warranty, check the coverage, count the cost, and consider the rules!
