You may have wondered why good quality tires are important for the overall performance of your vehicle. The word "tire" is actually defined as a ring-shaped covering that fits around a wheel's rim to protect it and enable better vehicle performance. Regular tire service is crucial to ensure that there is efficient traction between your vehicle and the road and that you have a flexible cushion to absorb the road's bumps and potholes. Don't put off a visit to your tire repair shop.

The Evolution Process:

Before the development of rubber, the first versions of tires were simply bands of metal that fitted around wooden wheels to prevent wear and tear. They would be heated in a forge fire, placed over the wheel and quenched, causing the metal to contract and fit tightly on the wheel. A skilled worker, known as a "wheelwright" carried out this work. The outer ring served to "tie" the wheel segments together for use, providing a wear-resistant surface to the perimeter of the wheel. The word "tire" thus emerged as a variant spelling to refer to the metal bands used to tie wheels.

Early rubber tires were solid before the invention of the pneumatic tire by Scottish inventor, John Boyd Dunlop. In 1887 while working as a veterinarian in Belfast, Dunlop developed the first pneumatic tire for his son's bicycle in an effort to prevent the headaches his son had while riding on rough roads. Dunlop is credited with the realization that rubber could withstand extreme wear and tear while retaining its resilience. The continuing development of this technology hinges on engineering advances. In terms of materials, the transformation of natural rubber into useful products (known as vulcanization) is credited to Charles Goodyear and Robert William Thomson. In the 1920s, synthetic rubbers were invented in the laboratories of Bayer.

With some exceptions, today's tires are pneumatic inflatable structures, comprising a doughnut-shaped body of cords and wires encased in rubber and generally filled with compressed air to form an inflatable cushion. They consist of a tread (to provide traction) and a body (to provide the containment for a quantity of compressed air). Today, over 1 billion tires are produced each year in over 400 factories.

To make sure the air pressure and tread of your tires will withstand the rigors of winter driving, be sure to have them checked by a tire repair technician. Spend a few minutes and dollars now for a quality tire service before you head down the road!
