Failing Brakes? Check the Calipers!
Are you having to stomp hard on the brake pedal to come to a complete stop? Are your brakes making strange noises? If so, it is time to schedule a brake service for an inspection of your braking system. There are several issues that could cause problems, such as bad calipers, a failing master cylinder, brake hose, or even just worn out pads or drums.
A common cause of problems with brakes is failing calipers. How can your brake service technician tell if the calipers are bad? Check the pad wear on each of the wheels. If the brakes on one side of the vehicle are worn to the metal, but the other side still has about 90% of its friction material remaining, the problem is probably a bad caliper.
Signs of failing calipers:
- They don’t always release, causing the brake pads to wear prematurely.
- The piston freezes and the brakes won't apply (this decreases the wear as the brakes aren’t actually working).
- The caliper slide pins stick. They may simply need lubricant.
- The caliper piston doesn’t compress.
Note: Make sure your brakes are fully operational so that you are driving--or stopping--as safe as possible.
