You don't have to be an expert on tires to be able to own and operate a vehicle. But it is beneficial to know at least some basics about tire repair or how to purchase new tires. That time will come, it's just a matter of tire wear!

A basic understanding of Tire Repair:

Just like brakes or wiper blades, tires wear out and eventually have to be either repaired or replaced. Most quality passenger car tires should last upwards of 60,000 miles with normal driving. However, if they have been driven aggressively, allowed to be improperly inflated, or if the vehicle has misaligned steering or suspension parts, they will wear out much sooner.

A quick visual inspection can reveal the extent of wear. If the band of wear located between the blocks of the tread is flush with the surface of the tread, or if the depth of the grooves between the treads is 2/32nd inch or less, it is time to replace your tires to maximize driving safety. The purpose of the grooves between the blocks of tire tread is to provide a place for the water to escape when driving into large puddles. Rain tires and all-season tires typically have wider grooves which are angled to re-route water away from under the center of the tire towards the edges of the tread. This helps reduce the risk of hydroplaning that can cause a loss of steering control.

Take Control: Some tire repair experts now recommend replacing tires even sooner than stated, especially if they are driven in a wet climate on rain-soaked roads. It can make a significant difference in steering control and braking.

If any of the above tire wear symptoms are present, have them professionally inspected at a certified tire repair shop. Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Gary's Quality Automotive.
