Many vehicle owners don't know that their engine needs antifreeze all year long, not just during the cold winter temperatures. If you have been driving around this summer with just plain water in the radiator, you may have experienced overheating problems, leading to an expensive radiator repair. Most drivers know that coolant/antifreeze keeps their car's engine from turning into a block of ice in the winter, but why is it necessary in the summer? Make sure to schedule a radiator service to make sure that there is an adequate ratio of coolant to water. You will find out what difference it makes.

Why does My Vehicle Need Radiator Service?

Coolant helps to keep your engine running cool as it raises the boiling point of the water, allowing it to carry more heat away from the engine. This is important during the hot temperatures of summer. If you let the coolant level get too low, the engine can heat up pretty quickly. If you allow this for extended periods of time, a radiator repair will be imminent. However, if the coolant is kept at the recommended level, you will have peace of mind knowing that you have done what's needed to avoid a costly radiator repair.

During a radiator service, ask your mechanic to inspect the engine's hoses. Also, look to see if there is any fluid leaking under the car where you park at night. A spill or a leak while the engine is running is a big indicator of a problem more serious than just simply adding more antifreeze. Take your vehicle in for a radiator repair as soon as possible to avoid more extensive and serious damage to your engine.

Tip: Check the antifreeze/coolant level regularly. If it is too low, coolant / anti-freeze can be added by unscrewing the cap on top of the opaque plastic overflow reservoir until the mixture reaches the full mark. Make sure you put the cap back on properly, and your vehicle will be ready to keep its cool for the last hot days of summer.
